Our Puppy Kindergarten classes are for puppies between 8 weeks and approximately 14 weeks old and we limit the number of puppies in class to 8. In this environment puppies can continue the socialization they started with their littermates. This socialization with other puppies and also with a variety of people, places and things is very important to their development at this age. In these classes we cover everything you need to know to get your puppy started on the road to becoming a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog.
From 3-12 weeks old your puppy is in the developmental period known as the socialization period. During this time socialization is one of the most important goals you should have with your puppy because there is a narrow window (ends at 12 weeks) in which to accomplish healthy socialization. After this time all socialization done will be much more difficult to accomplish. The catch is that many problems stemming from a lack of early socialization (growling at strangers, fear of children or men etc) do not become evident until your puppy is out of the socialization period. At that point addressing these problems becomes a behavior modification program rather than an early prevention program, the later being significantly more difficult. We highly recommend that you enroll your puppy in Puppy Kindergarten before he is 12 weeks old, if possible. If your puppy is already older than 12 weeks, don't panic, give us a call.
In addition to socialization our puppy kindergarten classes address all of the questions new puppy owners are facing. Whether this is your first dog or your 10th dog we know you will enjoy this class, it's a lot of fun!
Your instructor, Siobhan Mullally CPDT, has been working with dogs for 13 years. She has raised several litters of puppies and has been teaching Puppy Kindergarten classes for 8 years.
